Calligraphy gifts and commissions don’t have to be long poems: sometimes simple says it best!

This calligraphy gift was commissioned from The Wedding Calligrapher by the editor of leading UK wedding magazine Wedding Ideas. Rachel wanted a simple piece of calligraphy for her wedding anniversary.

This calligraphy commission was handwritten and illustrated for a very special birthday gift. The red rose adds a dramatic splash of colour and a romantic touch to this unique present idea.

The initial letter is gilded with 22 carat gold leaf. Gold leaf is also used in the swirling border design to complement the letter – and as you can see from this photograph, to add real shine to the piece!

Couture wedding table plan

I love this table plan. Names are written in Spencerian calligraphy, in coffee coloured ink. The title is hand painted and gilded, and the style is an elaborate gothic calligraphy.

Illustrations around the heading create a real focal point which includes mirror gloss gold leaf (22 carat).

The boards are textured artist’s mount board, with a soft cream for individual tables and pale coffee for the background.

Illuminated calligraphy letter

Illumination is one of the trickiest and most rewarding areas of calligraphy. It took me a few years to get the hang of it, and many experiments with different adhesives and techniques.

My advice to anyone learning illumination would be experiment with the various adhesives you can find; follow the instructions for drying times, and go slowly.

I use Kohler Miniatum Ink (from Scribblers), and genuine gold and silver leaf. Allow 20 minutes for the size to dry, then press the leaf onto the tacky glue. Pad all around the edges very slowly and carefully with a clean paintbrush and brush away the bits. Polish with the brush or with a little cotton wool.
